my blog is moving

I'm in the process of moving Kathy's Charm City to a new location. I began a brand new blog recently and have decided combine the two together at The Garbologist's Wife. You'll find the same Baltimore themes, photos and randomness plus more on this page. C'mon over and join me there.

roller skating and duck pin bowling

It's like I'm 12 years old again! Some friends and I are going roller skating at Putty Hill Skateland this weekend. And if that's not enough we'll be rounding out the weekend with some good old fashioned duckpin bowling.

Now, I haven't roller skated since I was 12 and I have fantasies that I will one day become a hardcore, crazy Charm City Roller Girl. So this weekend will be the litmus test of whether or not I can cut it as a derby girl or not. Really I will be just practicing standing up in the skates, then rollering around in them, slowly... it will be a triumph for me if I can accomplish those two things alone (I may leave the derby tryouts for another season).

Now talking about roller derby, there is Charm City Roller Girls bout coming up this month! If you've never been, this one will be really the best one to start with; it's an all-stars match against another city. It's your moment to be proud that you're from Baltimore as a guy in a hot dog suit rolls around the rink with the state flag in tow. And P.S. I highly recommend VIP tickets and closed toed shoes.

my etsy shop

I've been working on starting up my etsy shop. I'm terribly excited!! It's been a very long time coming.

It's called The Garbologist's Wife . It's an eco-friendly place where everything is vegan-friendly and integrates recycled materials into all I make and sell there.

I've also started a new blog exclusively for my new endeavour, www.TheGarbologistsWife.blogspot.com.

happy groundhog's day

This morning Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Let's all give a simultaneous "uuuggggggghhhh".

One good thing about winter are how beautiful the trees are. I headed over to the Visionary Art Museum on the edge of Federal Hill. I enjoyed watching the people meandering back and forth on the pinnacle of the hill and seeing the darkened outlines of the bare trees in the sunset.

Although yesterday was an unseasonably warm day here in Baltimore, I ended up inside at the historic Senator Theater last night... to watch the Super Bowl on the giant screen in high def. I'm not much of a football fan and never thought twice about high definition tv watching but my mind was blown by it's massiveness and clarity. My friends and I noticed such detail and how old, ugly or made up people really are. Plus they gave out 3-D glasses for the special 3-D commercials during halftime. Now I have 2 pairs of them and am prepared for any 3-D emergencies that may arise.

get a job, already!

The unemployment rate here in Maryland is at its highest in 15 years at 5.8% with 9,000 jobs lost last month, one of which was my own. Compared to the national average at 7.2%, or Michigan at 10.6%, my state isn't doing quite as poorly. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing going into the next weeks and months searching for a new job.

Like many others, I applied for unemployment insurance for the the first time. I've found that not too terribly much is requested from you when you are receiving this money from the state. Yesterday I had to attend a mandated workshop created by the government; this class has intentions to help unemployed people quickly find their way back to a job. They title it the "Early Intervention Workshop"; it makes me sound like an addict who needs to be on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky, not someone who was just laid off. I can't lie, the workshop material was geared towards folks who may not know how to spell their street address or know their own zip code.

Luckily I learned several things about how to conduct myself at an interview... thank goodness. Here are 3 things discussed during the session, take note people:

1) Do not wear oversized clothing that shows off your underwear
2) Don't wear your gold fronts on your teeth (especially if they spell out the F word)
3) Look your interviewer in the eye, but don't stare because that's rude

One of my favorite excersices was learning how to fill out a job application. We were given one from Wendy's. Here is mine... I wonder if I will get an interview?
